To the church of God in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be holy, together with all those everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ—their Lord and ours.
(1Cor. 1:2)

The word "Church" means convocation or an assembly. It designates the assemblies of the people, usually for a religious purpose. It is used frequently in the Greek Old Testament for the assembly of the Chosen People before God. In the Church, God is "calling together" God’s people from all the ends of the earth.
